Santa Maria-Bonita superintendent previews 'Bright Futures' priorities for 2026–27

Dr. McDefficker, superintendent of the Santa Maria-Bonita School District, told listeners the district is ‘‘muy emocionados’’ to reopen schools and welcome students for the 2026–27 year. He described the new school year as "un nuevo comienzo" and said staff have been preparing "arduamente" to receive students and help them succeed.
On the bilingual radio program host César Ruiz asked what most excites the superintendent about the return to school. Dr. McDefficker cited students’ energy and increased participation and said the district has been expanding curriculum through the Bright Futures program, now in its second year, to strengthen academic outcomes, confidence and literacy. "Ya eso es su 2º año... esto ha aumentado aún más a lo que es el académico de los estudiantes, su confianza y la alfabetización de los estudiantes," he said. The superintendent also noted a focus on mathematics and invited families to contact schools if they have concerns so students "se sienten bienvenidos."
