Big Sur Charter presents countywide petition; board schedules decision for June 10

The Monterey County board opened a public hearing April 28 on a petition from Big Sur Charter School seeking countywide authorization to operate a TK–8 charter for five years, from July 1, 2026, through June 30, 2031. Amy Elling, whom presenters identified as the school’s executive director, told the board the school runs a hybrid in‑person and home‑learning model, stresses coastal stewardship and has shown strong academic indicators.

"So, I'm Amy. I'm the executive director of Big Sur Charter School," Elling said during her presentation, describing the school as a "high performing charter school with strong foundation" and saying families come from across Monterey County to enroll. The petition was submitted to the board on April 14, 2026; the hearing was held under California Education Code §47605.6 and board policy 0420.4. Staff noted this hearing was for public input only and that the board is not taking action today; a decision hearing is scheduled for June 10, 2026.

Board members and staff read a packet of written public comments and letters in support, including teacher statements and parent testimonials describing academic and social‑emotional benefits. In response to questions from Trustee John McPherson, Elling said current enrollment is 105 and clarified the school's capacity and staffing ratios that affect maximum enrollment.

All written comments and testimony were entered into the record for the June decision. The board closed the public hearing at 08:56 and will consider the report of recommended findings and any staff recommendations at the June meeting.
