District delays full flooring replacement at Krause Elementary after asbestos and moisture tests

District consultants found asbestos-containing mastic beneath the gym tiles during campus walkthroughs and reported elevated moisture readings in the concrete slab that could prevent a warranted reinstallation of new resilient tile. Eric (Ryerson Gardner) and his team described air readings and probe testing, and staff told the board they will encapsulate affected areas for safety and postpone full abatement and replacement to planned school breaks.
“The gym flooring is hot. It has, asbestos mastic underneath the tile,” Eric said while summarizing field test results. He added the district did moisture-probe testing and will perform spot abatement and temporary patches so the space can remain usable until a full remediation window (Thanksgiving week for demo and Christmas break for replacement) can be scheduled.
