Council sets Sept. 8 public hearing for UW Bothell street vacation request

Council voted July 21 to set a public hearing on Sept. 8, 2026 to receive comment on a petition from the Board of Regents of the University of Washington to vacate a portion of Northeast 185th Street adjacent to the UW Bothell Cascadia campus.
Peter Pearson, senior development review engineer in Public Works, said the petition is consistent with downtown and campus district plans and the 2017 UW Bothell and Cascadia College campus master plan. He explained the process and timeline: staff would set the hearing for Sept. 8, take evidence at that quasi‑judicial hearing, and the council could make an ordinance decision on Oct. 20 or consolidate some steps depending on additional legal review.
Ryan McGriven, speaking earlier for UW Bothell, said the petition is intended to “enhance safety and the pedestrian experience while maintaining essential emergency access, utilities, and walking and biking connectivity,” and advance the campus–downtown connection.
City Attorney Eileen Kiefer clarified that the Sept. 8 meeting would be the quasi‑judicial hearing where the council would open the record and receive evidence; council could continue the hearing if more time were needed. Councilmember Dodd moved to set the hearing date and the resolution passed 7–0.
Next steps: staff will prepare hearing materials, notify interested parties, and return to council for an ordinance decision after the hearing and record are complete.
