Tammy Hunsaker, the city's director of community and neighborhoods, told attendees that the Viaduct Trail and its artwork result from sustained collaboration between artists, transportation staff, engineers and Poplar Grove residents. "These projects show what's possible when artists, engineers, fabricators, transportation professionals, and community members collaborate from day 1," she said, adding that staff spent time listening to residents so the final design would reflect neighborhood character.
Hunsaker said the trail is one element of a broader push to expand travel choices under the city's transportation master plan, citing improvements to bus stops, increased bus frequency and new bikeways. She thanked specific staff members (Mark Stevens, Lynn Jacobs, Felicia Baca), the Salt Lake City Art and Design Board, and nearby residents for shaping the vision and encouraged the public to join the evening's celebratory ride.
