An agency official urged parents and bus drivers to teach children how to approach bus stops and avoid dangerous behavior. "Children don't judge speed and distance the same way adults do," the official said, and recommended that parents teach children to look both ways and make sure the area is clear before approaching the bus. The official added that children should not walk behind buses.
The official also urged teen drivers to remove distractions and buckle seat belts, noting some students may be driving to school for the first time and that other motorists should be patient. "... remind them to put away their phone, buckle everyone up, don't be distracted," the official said, and asked other drivers to allow extra time to accommodate new drivers.
