A supervisor introduced a draft ordinance to levy an annual tax on coin-operated amusement devices and skill machines, saying many nearby municipalities already collect such fees and that the revenue could add to township funds.
"It could be $3.04, $5,000 in taxes," a proponent said while estimating potential revenue after inventorying machines and locations. The sponsor proposed $100 per amusement device per year and $3.50 for skill machines; other members suggested lower figures such as $2.50 for skill machines or a flat $200 per machine.
Several board members expressed concern for small businesses and nonprofit organizations that use coin-operated devices. One business owner warned additional fees could deter new businesses and increase costs for existing ones. Members agreed to exempt jukeboxes and to clarify exemptions and enforcement mechanisms (code enforcement officer or police to verify machines and collect fees).
After discussion and suggested edits, a motion to advertise the ordinance with the jukebox exemption and amended fee language was made, seconded, and approved by voice vote. The board did not finalize exact fee amounts; the advertised draft will reflect the agreed exemptions and proposed rates for public review.
