District outlines convocation, welcome-week and back-to-school bash plans

Superintendent Howard presented convocation and start-of-year logistics, including a draft convocation agenda that would acknowledge board members, feature a keynote (Lieutenant Colonel Dr. Graves, ROTC instructor, pending confirmation), recognize teacher and employee-of-the-year nominees, and introduce new staff. Howard said convocation materials will be digital to reduce paper and that other staff (Nadir, Murdoch, Manley and Adams) will support convocation in his absence.
Howard also reviewed welcome-back week activities and new-staff orientation; he said 21 certified new staff were onboarded and described plans to bus new staff around town to see neighborhoods by building. The superintendent confirmed the district's back-to-school bash on Aug. 8 (11 a.m.–2 p.m., middle school), with community partners providing tables and Junior ROTC providing food. He said transportation information will be sent via the parent portal this year rather than mailed notices and that the district is evaluating route-tracking software to give parents better alerts about bus delays.
