Mayor Vida Williams outlines priorities for Arcola at city meeting

Vida Williams, who identified herself as mayor of Arcola, addressed residents at City Hall on Sept. 10, 2022, and laid out early priorities for her administration: repairing infrastructure damaged in recent storms, advancing a community center project and expanding public-safety resources.

"I am Vida Williams. I'm the mayor of Arcola, Texas," Williams said as she opened the meeting, and she thanked community members and local staff for their support. Williams said she returned to Arcola in 1994, helped form the nonprofit Community Express to repurpose Oak Lane Elementary as a community hub, and emphasized that her work is motivated by long-standing ties to the city.

Williams framed the agenda around tangible projects. She described efforts to survey storm damage after Hurricane Beryl, said the city will invest in drainage and other infrastructure and noted Fort Bend County has already begun related work. The mayor said the city is talking with FEMA about possible reimbursement for some repairs.

The mayor also promoted cultural programming and youth engagement, announcing plans for a gallery dedication and a proposed annual cultural festival to showcase the city's history and growing diversity. She asked residents to participate in shaping city services and invited people to visit city hall to share concerns.

Notably, an earlier speaker introducing the mayor used a different name when praising the officeholder; Commissioner Grady Preston referred to "Rita Weaves" in his introduction. The person who spoke at the podium identified herself as Vida Williams, and this article attributes remarks in the meeting to those speakers as they stated them.
