Council opens door to more downtown food trucks, approves ordinance first reading

The Auburn City Council voted to introduce by title the ordinance amending the city’s 2013 mobile‑vending rules, a change staff said would let downtown businesses host food trucks for promotions and events while preserving protections for brick‑and‑mortar operators.
Jonathan Reich, economic development director, told the council the ordinance tightens conditions for ancillary mobile vending: property‑owner authorization is required, planning must be notified at least 24 hours in advance, health‑code requirements and restroom/handwashing access are mandatory, and ancillary vending at a location would be limited to six hours in any 24‑hour period. Reich said the amendment removes the two‑hour cap tied to use permits and retains a use‑permit pathway for permanent or frequent rotations.
During a public hearing, Michelle Tuggle of the Auburn Area Chamber of Commerce and local business owner Dallas Drake said the change would help attract customers and support newly opened businesses in old‑town downtown. A council member moved and the council approved first reading by roll call; the item will return for a second reading and final adoption at the council’s next regular meeting, with the ordinance taking effect 30 days after final adoption.
