Committee reviews renovation plans for commercial building flagged as 'forbidden llama'

The Chair opened discussion of an agenda item listed as "the forbidden llama," saying staff are following up on a recent permit submission for second-floor bedroom renovations and will send a letter to the building owner’s attorney.
A building official said the owners submitted renovation plans and that staff are conducting a plan review. "They did turn in a building plan in to renovate the 2nd Floor and bedrooms," the building official said, and staff are compiling a list of required materials and safety measures. The official added the city needs clarifying information about whether the building can be subdivided for residential use, saying, "I believe in the least that they are not allowed to subdivide the building."
Fire-safety items were flagged as part of the plan review. A fire representative noted that full architectural and structural plans, including information on fire sprinklers and alarms, are needed before work can proceed. Staff said they will route the compiled materials to the building owner's attorney for confirmation of lease and owner consent before enforcement or further approvals occur.
