A patron asked commissioners to reconsider or delay the use of $40,000 authorized by the commissioners for an animal shelter remodel and urged the board to use grant-matching and the donations line item to maximize the available funds.
"I spoke to the commissioners about just possibly tabling, holding off, slightly...My hope is that we could, communicate, help fund that if we could help grow that account a little bit more, that line item, and maybe we could maximize that money with the grant and potentially double that money," the patron said, urging the board to consider alternatives and to use grant writers to seek matching funds.
The patron also requested more detailed monthly financial reporting for the shelter, asking for itemized receipts showing how much comes from shot clinics, adoptions and other activities. Board members and the auditor explained that the shelter submits collections and receipts to the treasurer and that the county's accounting system aggregates donations into a single fund line; a more itemized report would require pulling claim forms and additional work.
Board members encouraged the patron to work with the commissioners and treasurer to define the level of detail desired so staff can determine if and how to provide it.
