The countybudget committee recommended a $1,000 raise for full-time employees and a 35-cent hourly increase for part-time staff as part of its draft budget work, the committee reported.
"We're also recommending that we give a $1,000 raise to the full time, folks at a 35¢ raise, which is equivalent of hopefully around $500 for the part time folks," the budget committee member said, summarizing the package of modest raises and staffing recommendations. The committee also recommended lifting the hiring freeze and said further budget discussions will continue next week.
Committee members discussed the effect on county reserves. The budget committee reported county general reserves are currently about $7.5 million and estimated reserves would fall to roughly $7.03to $7.04 million after planned payouts. Members noted some departments had already cut deeply and could not reduce spending further.
The committee flagged a roughly $80,000 saving achieved by removing a previously proposed insurance line for council commissioners and said final decisions will be part of upcoming budget hearings beginning Aug. 11.
