La Porte schools to enforce Indiana's "bell-to-bell" wireless-device law using Yondr pouches

Sandra Wood, superintendent of the La Porte Community School Corporation, said the district will comply with Indiana's 2026 Senate Bill 78 requiring schools to restrict student access to wireless devices "from the beginning of the school day" to the end of the day.
"At our June board meeting, the board of school trustees approved this policy," Wood said, adding the district chose sealed pouches to reduce uncertainty about locker security and to implement the law consistently across buildings.
The policy expands prior rules that limited phone use during class to a "bell-to-bell" restriction that covers passing periods and lunch. Wood said the district will include the Yondr pouch requirement in student registration materials and post the full policy in online handbooks and a dedicated web page.
The district will assign each eligible student a numbered pouch at the start of the year; teachers will perform a quick visual "seal" check at the start of class and wall-mounted locking stations and staff will handle locking and unlocking. Wood said details for station locations will be communicated to families before school begins.
Administrators emphasized the policy is meant to remove the daily enforcement burden from teachers and to restore focus during instruction. "We are required now by state law to enforce this policy," Wood said. "We intend to do this with fidelity."
