Council authorizes commission of 'Loop Dee Loop' for Garden Street streetscape

Amanda Holland, chair of the Public Art Committee, presented the committee's recommendation to commission Loop Dee Loop by Flywheel Industrial Arts for the Garden Street and Williston Street streetscape. Holland said the committee received eight responses, interviewed four finalists and chose the Flywheel design because it is viewable from both road and path users and "harmonizes with the build out of our city center." "Loop Dee Loop, by Flywheel Industrial Arts," she said when formally identifying the selected piece.

Alana Blanchard clarified design elements and seating: the commissioned design includes two benches attached to the sculpture, and additional benches were shown as optional city add-ons. Council members asked about skateboarding risks; project staff said the benches will have a concrete base with metal and wood surfacing to reduce attractiveness for skateboarding. Councilor Andrew moved to authorize the city manager to commission the public art; Councilor Elizabeth seconded the motion, and the council approved it unanimously.
