The Milton-Freewater Unified SD 7 board approved three extra-duty coaching contracts to address growing participation in spring athletics.
Superintendent Mr. Duff told the board, "We have 81 students at the high school signed up for just track," and said the district likely will need to hire one to two additional assistant coaches at the high-school level and possibly the middle school. He predicted the growth could require additional transportation (extra buses) for meets. The board approved the contracts; the transcript records that one board member abstained during the voice vote.
During discussion, S3 noted volunteer coaches’ training and oversight: volunteers sign in, complete OSAA training, and are listed on district paperwork; the district receives formal notices from OSAA if volunteers violate conduct rules. Board members framed the hires as a response to rising student engagement in curricular sports.
