Board approves policy changes to add parent notifications on safe storage and overdose response

Dr. Ball (S4) presented proposed edits to the School Community Relations section (policy 6.26) to rename it "Required Notifications" and to add two items required by recent General Assembly action: a timeline to notify parents within 30 calendar days of the first day of school about secure prescription-drug storage and firearm storage responsibilities, and explicit inclusion of school-overdose response and parental-notification language from state code.
"The general assembly, charged us with being responsible to develop a process to notify parents or guardians of, the importance of securely storing any prescription drug as well as the responsibility to safely store any firearm in the household," Dr. Ball said. She said the changes reflect statutory requirements (effective July 1 in the transcript) and asked the board to approve the policy language. A motion to approve the policy revision was moved by S8, seconded by S6, and approved by voice vote (6-0).
Board members asked whether the notifications would be division-wide and Dr. Ball confirmed the language mirrors the Code of Virginia and would notify parents of every student enrolled in ACPS when triggered. Dr. Ball said the change does not represent a change in current day-to-day practice for the division but ensures compliance with the newly required wording.
