Sheriff reports jail population and uptick in speeding; county to run speed studies

Brookings County’s sheriff reported current detention center statistics and ongoing traffic-enforcement concerns during the Aug. 4 meeting.
The sheriff said the detention center held 59 inmates at the time of the report, of whom 23 had Brookings County charges and 36 were from other jurisdictions, including federal detainees. The sheriff also reviewed the county’s 24/7 and related monitoring programs, reporting program participation numbers.
The sheriff noted an increase in speeding enforcement activity, with 184 speeding violations in July compared with 142 in June and 101 in May, and said deputies are targeting problem areas. County highway and sheriff’s staff plan to run speed analyses on selected county roads (including an intersection near Bruce and the Interstate on/off ramp by Highway 30) and consider additional safety devices where warranted.
The sheriff also described the benefit of a deputy assigned to civil process work, saying that assignment reduces patrol interruptions and pays for itself.
