City awards $250,000 contract to replace aging community‑center climbing wall

The City of Glenwood Springs will replace the 25‑year‑old climbing wall at the community center after a staff inspection found structural cracking, separation from the substrate and about 30% of bolt holes unusable. Parks & Recreation Director Tim Bergman briefed council Aug. 6 and recommended awarding the replacement contract to El Dorado, the lowest responsive bidder; council approved the award.
Bergman said staff monitors cracks daily and closed a right‑side route after the inspection; he described the wall’s heavy program use (6,073 climbers and 249 adaptive climbers last year and more than 4,000 year‑to‑date). He told council demolition and major work will begin during the center’s annual week‑long closure at month’s end, with continued installation work afterward. The replacement includes demolition (estimated $50,000) and construction of a modern climbing surface and structure.
