County highway director outlines road closures and Smart Avenue schedule

Brookings County highway staff provided multiple maintenance updates during the Aug. 4 commission meeting, including planned closures and contractor assignments.
Brian (highway) said Brookings County Road 145 between County Road 199 and County Road 4 will be closed for a culvert replacement at the inlet of Lake Oakwood. The county will set a cofferdam, dewater the site, remove and replace culverts and reinstall sheet piling; crews will perform most of the work and Holloway Construction will install the sheet pile cofferdam.
He also reported that County Road 16A (214th) between 34th Avenue and Aurora would be closed starting at 9 a.m. on the meeting day while crews prepare the east end of a project for paving. Work is expected to be completed by mid-Friday for that patching operation, and Smart Avenue underground work continues with an anticipated mid-to-late September completion.
Brian said the county plans to use its patching contract with Bose for surface work and that Dunnic Construction will begin work on County Road 2 beginning Aug. 16. He noted the immediate closures are temporary and intended to provide safe conditions for crews and the traveling public.
