Resident urges tighter limits on data center siting in Johnson City

During the public-comment 'other' portion of the meeting, resident Michael Marvel urged the commission to set clearer parameters for data-center siting and to avoid rules that would allow them to locate outside industrial zones by petition.
Marvel warned data centers generate continuous noise and take substantial area; he said allowing petitions to change siting rules would open the door to sprawl. "If you allow them to sprawl like in Boston... you can live the high rise right next door to a data center not even know it's there," he said, arguing that industrial areas are more appropriate for such facilities.
He asked the commission to revisit a July amendment that, in his view, expanded allowable locations for data centers and to keep them in industrial zones to protect residential neighborhoods.
