Wellington to use $50,000 DOLA incentive to fast-track affordable-housing site evaluations

Staff told commissioners Wellington earned a $50,000 incentive from the Department of Local Affairs for adopting an expedited-review policy for qualifying affordable-housing projects.
"We were one of the first communities to create this expedited review policy, and so we did receive a $50,000 grant incentive as part of their incentive program," Britney Lenoir said. Mr. Byrd explained that the town has issued a solicitation to procure consultant resources to perform a townwide evaluation of town-owned and partner-owned properties and that staff anticipates screening 2—3 sites for more detailed site analyses.
The planned work would evaluate water and sewer infrastructure needs, road improvements, and plan-level cost estimates that stop short of construction analysis. Staff said findings will generate a mini master plan and recommendations that could return to the commission late this year or by early next year for further consideration.
