Planning commission to apply for $25,000 municipal planning grant, board approves

The Select Board voted to authorize the planning commission to move forward with a state Municipal Planning Grant application that proposes a $25,000 award to update Williamstown’s town plan.
The planning commission chair told the board the commission is working with the regional planning commission as consultant and described newly added state requirements — including energy and flood-safety elements — that make a full update more involved. “The grant application, the amount would be 25,000,” the planning commission chair said during his presentation.
Board members discussed the grant maximum (staff noted some towns can receive up to $30,000) and the local match. The planning chair said the town currently has $8,000 budgeted toward the match and recommended applying now; the board approved moving forward by voice vote.
The planning commission will manage the consultant relationship if the grant is awarded and expects a competitive review process with awards announced after the March 31 application deadline.
