Monte Sereno council authorizes automated payments for routine utility bills

The Monte Sereno City Council voted Jan. 20 to authorize automated payments for recurring utility bills for city hall and other city facilities, a staff proposal aimed at cutting manual check-processing and avoiding late fees. City Manager (speaker 5) told the council the change would reduce the number of checks issued and save staff time.
"Staff recommends that the city council authorize automated bill payments for the recurring utility bills noted in the staff report," the city manager stated during the staff presentation. Councilmembers pressed for continued visibility into payment details; one asked that the council still be able to see payee, date and amount for each automated transaction. The city manager agreed those details would be presented to council.
Councilmember (speaker 9) moved to approve the proposal; the motion was seconded and carried by the council. The measure is limited to routine utility payments for now, though the city manager said future automation of other payment types may be evaluated when the new finance system is implemented.
Councilmembers framed the change as an efficiency improvement that preserves oversight: automated payments will be used to streamline recurring obligations while keeping invoice-level transparency available to the council.
