School board asks voters to move district annual meeting to town-meeting day starting 2027
Summary
Essex Westford School District representatives told the council they will ask voters to move their annual meeting to town-meeting day beginning in 2027 to streamline voting and reduce costs; district leaders said the board and finance team are ready for the transition but no formal city action is required because the council can change the city date via charter authority.

Essex Westford School District officials presented a ballot initiative asking voters whether to move the district's annual meeting to town-meeting day beginning in 2027 and beyond. "We have a ballot initiative on the 14th ballot to ask the community to move the vote... starting in 2027," said Marla Verasami, vice chair of the district's associate school board, who said the district is aligning with the majority of Vermont districts.
Jemima Talbot, clerk for the school board, said the change is meant to streamline the process and reduce recurring costs. "This will save us a little bit of money and hopefully make voting a little bit easier for people," Talbot said. Verasami noted the board and finance committee — including finance officer Heather Bushey, whom she named — felt prepared to make the shift and to run an accelerated schedule for next year if the budget vote requires it.
Council members asked about timing and budgeting implications. One councilor noted that a later vote can provide more time for budgeting and a possible revote if a budget fails; Verasami said moving the vote to town-meeting timing could make revotes less rushed. Council member 4 reminded attendees that, for the city side, "there is no question in front of the voters because the city council has the authority to change the annual meeting date," noting that the council's charter change from prior years gives the council that authority.
No formal council vote on the district initiative was taken; the board representatives asked the council to be available for questions and to note community conversations ahead of the April 14 vote.
