Board approves limited Level III world-language access for middle-school students via CIESC

Superintendent Rebecca Coffman explained changes to state graduation requirements reduced middle-level World Language credits and prompted a shift to Level I-only courses at the middle level. The district identified roughly 12 students who had already completed Level II and recommended an exception to provide Level III asynchronously through the Central Indiana Educational Services Center (CIESC) at a cost of $520 per student.
"There are roughly 12 students at the middle level who have completed Level I and Level II of World Language and are positioned to continue growth and exploration beyond Level II while enrolled in middle school. The estimated cost for this offering in the 2026-2027 school year is $520.00 per student or $6,240.00 in total, and STAR Bank donation funds will be used," Coffman said. The Board approved the exception for the 2026–27 school year and noted that completion of the asynchronous course would not guarantee ZCHS credit or automatic placement to Level IV; students would take a placement exam at the end of the year to determine 9th-grade placement.
The decision uses donated funds to support accelerated learners while maintaining the district’s standard credit and placement policies at ZCHS.
