Trailside summer school boosts IREAD scores; no third-grade retentions reported

Trailside Elementary Principal Jennifer Raycroft reported that 70 children attended the district summer-school program this year and that 20 third-grade students who took the June 2026 IREAD will not be retained.
"70 children attended summer school, with 20 third-grade students taking IREAD in June 2026, and none of them will need to be retained," Raycroft told the board. She and Superintendent Rebecca Coffman credited ZCS teachers, staff and literacy coaches for the gains.
Raycroft provided assessment-point gains for students who attended summer-school instruction: March to May averaged a 25.9-point increase, May to June averaged a 31.7-point increase, and March to June averaged a 57.6-point increase for third-grade attendees. She also reported outcomes for 29 second-grade students assessed in June, citing March–May and March–June improvements. Dr. Coffman said the program is a district response to changes issued by the Indiana Department of Education in 2025 and thanked families and staff for participation.
The reports prompted no board questions and no formal action beyond the presentation. The district’s first day of school is scheduled for Aug. 4, 2026.
