Council hears ad hoc update on Garvey corridor study as cities weigh dedicated bus lane for Line 70

Sanchez said Line 70 carries more than 15,000 riders per day and that the subcommittee is considering bus shelters, dedicated lanes and corridor upgrades across Monterey Park, Rosemead, El Monte and South El Monte. "This is a very unique opportunity, not just to fulfill that promise, but also to connect the San Gabriel Valley," Sanchez said, urging public engagement at a July 20 meeting at Rosemead Community Center. Staff noted the COG is still in the planning phase and aims to have elements in place before the 2028 Olympics, but specific funding and decision dates remain unsettled.
Councilmembers asked staff whether there is a firm deadline and whether the project will affect parking, business access or neighborhood traffic. Staff said the COG is seeking consensus among corridor cities because a single city opting out can reduce corridor benefits. The council encouraged the public to attend the next subcommittee meeting and flagged outreach about potential construction or restriping impacts.
