The Town of Concord Historic Districts Commission voted to approve new signage for Concord Lamp & Shade at 21 Walden Street after the applicant presented measurements and material samples. Christopher “Chip” Hewitt, who said he purchased the 50‑year-old business in December 2025, described a two-part proposal: a flat sign above the storefront and a replacement blade sign that retains the existing iron bracket. "It's about a 164 inches wide," Hewitt said of the proposed flat sign, and noted the applicant planned to use HD sign foam for durability.
Commissioners asked about dimensions, lighting and local examples of the proposed material; Jeff Young said he liked the colors and quipped, "I am kidding… Lamp and shade," while another commissioner noted similar materials are already used at other Concord stores. After brief public comment (none was raised), a commissioner moved to approve the application as submitted, the motion was seconded, and the roll-call vote passed.
The approval allows Hewitt to install the new signs as shown, with the applicant free to leave the meeting after action was taken. The commission recorded the vote and the applicant may proceed under the town’s standard permitting and fabrication processes.
