District to demo failing food-service freezer; temporary storage used while replacement is procured
Summary
Staff reported long-term improper installation caused freezer floors to buckle and sidewalls to shift; the district plans to demo the unit and pour a new slab, with lead time for a new freezer estimated 6–10 weeks plus installation time. Staff will use a smaller temporary freezer and adjust orders in the interim.

Facilities staff told the board the district’s main food-service warehouse freezer is failing and has structural damage caused by long-term condensation due to an improper original installation. The presenter said "the floors are buckling, the sidewalls are shifting, and the cement pad underneath the freezer is cracking due to condensation that has developed over time." The original installer is no longer in business and any warranty was voided, staff said.
As a temporary workaround the district activated a smaller Summers Lane freezer (about one-quarter the size) and adjusted incoming commodity orders and delivery schedules to fit the reduced capacity. Staff estimated lead time for a replacement freezer at roughly 6–10 weeks plus about four weeks for installation, and said the district will compare engineering and installation costs rather than attempt to salvage the existing unit.
Board members asked about insurance options and temporary rental alternatives; staff said insurance coverage is unlikely because the deterioration occurred over time rather than from a single insurable event, and that renting deep-freeze storage in the community may be possible but depends on availability and temperature capability. Staff will return to the board with cost estimates and an installation timeline.
