Board approves FieldTurf installation for Strongsville High baseball and softball fields

The Strongsville City Board of Education voted 3–2 on Aug. 7 to accept a FieldTurf USA Inc. proposal to install synthetic turf on the baseball and softball fields at Strongsville High School. The motion, introduced by the superintendent’s office, authorized a project not to exceed $3,275,979.53 to be funded from the district’s 070 fund.
Dr. Bridal, who presented the proposal, said the district has faced repeated cancellations and postponements of games because of drainage and surface issues and argued replacement was necessary so students would not lose what he described as "25% of their season." He told the board the base price for the baseball field in the bid was $2,200,000, with alternates and a 5% contingency included in the total figure.
Jason, the district staff member who described technical aspects of the installation, explained a rotating-square system for the pitching mound and batter’s boxes that he said would reduce recurring patch costs. Jason said the district could expect the quoted, higher-grade turf to last "12 to 15" years.
Board members debated warranty coverage, contingency calculations and whether to select a lower-cost turf option; staff recommended keeping the higher-quality turf despite a potential $58,000 saving with a lesser product. Dr. Bridal and Jason also said they expect to begin construction this fall and to progress as weather permits.
The motion passed with Mr. Wall and Mr. Holmes voting yes, Mr. Mickle and Mrs. Bissle voting no, and Mrs. Hausam voting yes. Chair announced the motion carries 3–2. The board did not vote on any other business and adjourned at 07:22.
