County weighs GFL contract increase against an in‑house pickup option

County Manager Thomas Weaver told the July 28 work session that the county received notice from GFL of a cost indexing that would affect residential pickup rates. He said, “Our annual cost to GFL would be going from 312,000.00 a year to 342,000.00 a year, just for residential.”
Weaver said the county recently signed a one‑year contract that auto‑renews and that the change could take effect in about 60 days. Staff presented an internal estimate that operating residential pickup in‑house could save roughly $92,000 annually but would require purchasing a truck (the cost of equipment was not included in the savings estimate). Commissioners asked staff to keep the item on the work session list, review the contract language, and examine payment and enforcement procedures at the recycle center.
