Cusseta–Chattahoochee County awarded $600,000 SEID grant to begin Ft. Benning trail

County Manager Thomas Weaver told the commission on Dec. 2 that the Unified Government of Cusseta–Chattahoochee County has been awarded a $600,000 SEID grant to start a trail connection coming from Fort Benning. "This is a 600,000 grant for the beginning of the trail coming from Ft. Benning," Weaver said, and the county must formally accept the award and select an engineer before design work begins.
Weaver said the grant program can be slow to move from award to construction; he recommended the commission pick an engineer so preliminary planning can start. At the Dec. 22 work session he reported preliminary firm scores (EMC Engineering and Moon Meeks & Associates among the higher-ranked firms) and asked the board to place engineer selection on the Jan. 6 agenda. No construction timeline was set; Weaver said staff will return with a scope, procurement steps and a recommended firm for a vote.
