Sheriff reports jail population of 114, warns retirements could force boarding out female inmates

Sheriff Brian Schenck reported to the committee that Cayuga County Jail was holding 114 incarcerated individuals at the time of the report, including 15 federal board-ins and 4 local board-ins. He added that nine NY State parolees were detained for new charges and one parolee was detained for a violation.
Schenck said the jail has received resignation/retirement notices from two additional custody deputies (both female). Staff are preparing a contingency plan which could involve boarding female inmates at other facilities, generating board-in fees and a potential loss of revenue. He warned that if a pod must be closed because of staffing reductions, the county could be responsible for additional unbudgeted costs. Schenck also reported the Sheriff’s Office received 272 community survey responses asking for additional traffic enforcement, increased visibility, crime and drug enforcement, community engagement and youth programs. The office received a formal request from the Cayuga County Deputy Sheriff’s Police Association to begin negotiating a successor labor agreement as the Road Patrol Division contract expires at the end of 2026.
