Horry County board denies request to remove large live oak at Arcadian Shores

Sandra Baird, the applicant, told the board the live oak near her house has dying lower limbs and roots reaching the structure and that an insurer told her "the tree is going into your roof" and another quoted $2,000 more a year to insure the house. Staff presented a site inspection showing the tree is 33.3 inches in diameter, appears healthy, and recommended mitigation of 20 replacement trees at 2.5-inch caliper or a $6,000 fee in lieu.
Board members asked about trimming, planting plans and whether replacement trees could fit on the lot; staff said the county ordinances list acceptable canopy species and that any on-site planting must be shown on a site plan. After discussion and public questioning, the board voted 5–3 to deny the removal request, leaving the tree in place and directing staff to work with the homeowner on mitigation and next steps.
