Waccamaw Regional Transit Authority presents FY26 budget; council approves payments

A representative of the Waccamaw Regional Transit Authority (RTA) presented the authority’s FY26 budget, which begins Oct. 1, and outlined a compensation plan aimed at reducing about 30% driver turnover seen in calendar year 2024.
The presenter said the plan targets larger entry-level increases for mechanics, road supervisors and drivers — categories that account for roughly 60% of RTA employment — and noted service increases representing about a quarter’s worth of additional service (about $400,000) and delivery of four new buses expected in March. On the budget totals, the presenter said, “We're contemplating about a $1,600,000 increase in total, expense,” and described roughly $11,150,000 in additional labor cost assumptions incorporated in the plan. Council approved the FY26 budget authorization and the county administrator was authorized to release October and future payments for FY26.
