Approximately 50 young people received certificates after completing a five-day Junior Police Academy run by the Edison Police Department, organizers said during a graduation ceremony that included remarks from department leaders and local elected officials.
"To our recruits, congratulations. You came here on Monday morning as individuals, many not knowing each other, and today, you stand together as a team," Detective Matthews of the department’s Community Policing unit told the audience, summarizing the week’s activities and the program’s emphasis on teamwork and character.
The program included classroom and hands-on activities such as a canine unit demonstration, a helicopter display near police headquarters, instruction on motor-vehicle stops and DUI enforcement, and presentations from the FBI and the New Jersey State Police. Edison TV recorded the week to produce a video shown during the ceremony.
Mayor Sam Joshi and members of the township council attended and praised the recruits. Joshi noted the department had been highlighted by the New Jersey attorney general in recent guidance, saying the department’s detective and specialized units were examples of approaches recommended in state guidance.
Organizers closed the ceremony with awards and photo opportunities; parents were asked to collect recruits’ bags and certificates after the program concluded.
