Public works and IT internships gave students field and technical experience

Several interns described how placements in the Department of Public Works (DPW) and Information Technology gave them hands-on experience with city operations.
Arthur Somerville, a DPW intern, described inspecting construction sites and responding to problems such as a water-filled stoplight control box that required draining. “We had to go drain it,” he said, pointing to a moment that combined hands-on work and teamwork. Arthur and other DPW interns emphasized patience and collaboration as skills they developed.
Jeremiah Somerville, an IT intern, said his work involved monitoring and resolving tickets for phones, printers and computers across city departments. “I wait for tickets to pop up...we fix computers, monitors, PCs, printers, anything that's in the county,” he said, summarizing the reactive and varied nature of IT work.
Intern reports show departments use the program for entry-level tasks that also provide meaningful exposure to municipal functions.
