City plans high‑visibility crosswalks and relocated beacon near schools under HSIP projects

Christopher Fong, the city engineer, told the workshop the city received HSIP Cycle 11 funding for crosswalk improvements at locations serving local schools and that council awarded a contractor for the work in August.
"It was awarded by council to a contractor in August of this year," Fong said, describing HSIP Cycle 11 work and planned crosswalks at 5th and A (near John Knight Middle School) and the Good Neighbor School site. He said the improvements will include flashing beacons and high‑visibility crosswalk markings intended to slow traffic and improve student safety.
Fong also described HSIP Cycle 12 concepts, including new striping, curb buildouts and shifting a flashing beacon currently on Highway 113 near C Street to a new location at B Street to better align with school traffic patterns and an underpass bike path connection.
Staff described these projects as funded (where awarded) but noted many other bicycle and pedestrian projects in the ATP list remain without dedicated funding.
