Council OKs city co-sponsorship, street closures and $5,000 for downtown Christmas tree lighting

The Dixon City Council voted unanimously on Sept. 2 to approve city co-sponsorship of the annual downtown Christmas Tree Lighting event, authorize street and parking lot closures (including an application to Caltrans for Highway 113), and allocate a $5,000 contribution from the Community Support Fund to support event expenses.

City staff presenter Lauren explained the change to a Saturday date (Dec. 6) to increase the likelihood of a Highway 113 closure and improve attendance, and outlined programming that will include live music, decorations, visits with Santa, stationary floats and animal exhibits. “This event will have live music, decorations, visits with Santa,” Lauren said during the presentation. Staff noted the event was not previously budgeted, detailed estimated day-of staffing and equipment rental costs, and requested authority to use staff overtime and the City of Dixon logo on published material.

A DDBA representative (Angela) described the event as community-focused rather than a fundraiser and emphasized safety concerns that supported the change to a full street closure. A public commenter said the agenda lacked sufficient operational detail ahead of the meeting and asked the city to be careful about notice procedures. Council members thanked staff and DDBA organizers, expressed support for the move to Saturday and the expected increase in attendance, and approved the requested contribution and closures; staff will apply for Caltrans permits and return any unused contingency funds if not required.
