Golden Wheel board urges Ottawa County to shore up senior meals amid staffing shortfall

Doug Plummer and Berneice Wilcox, members of the Golden Wheel board, told the Ottawa County Commission during public forum that the senior meal program again lacks staffing and needs more local support.
"We need to provide more money for the cook," Berneice Wilcox said, and Plummer said the board has reviewed and returned revisions to a Memorandum of Understanding from the Flint Hills Area Agency on Aging but "have not heard back." Commissioner Carla Grund told the commission that each week meals go unprovided "it hurts our seniors." The comments came as the commission discussed whether Golden Wheel should separate from the Flint Hills Area Agency on Aging to secure more reliable service and funding for local senior meals.
Commissioner Grund also corrected a prior statement about account balances, saying she had mistakenly said OCCK had $3.9 million in non-interest-bearing accounts; she clarified it was the Flint Hills Area Agency on Aging that held $3.5 million in non-interest-bearing accounts. The commission did not take formal action at the meeting but acknowledged the need to ensure continued meal service and directed staff to follow up on the MOU status and local funding options.
