Committee approves creation of two deputy sheriff positions after staffing debate; vote 4‑1

"The long-term request was to add 7 deputies, 2 supervisors and a chief deputy; so, 10 positions in total over a five-year period; two per year," Undersheriff Logsdon said. Committee members questioned the timing mid‑budget year and whether the positions were driven by attrition; management and finance staff said the positions were presented as zero‑based and could be funded within existing salary lines. The motion to create two deputy sheriff positions (Grade 11) was made by Deborah Shannon, seconded by K. Michael Hanna, and carried 4-1 (Mr. Van Etten opposed).
The committee discussed the long‑term plan and possible incremental hires; no further fiscal changes were made at the meeting beyond the authorization to create the two positions.
