Committee adopts 2027 workers’ compensation budget as reserves remain strong

Risk Manager Scott Sprague walked legislators through the plan’s history and current status, noting reserves of approximately $17 million and a decline in claims from about 100 per year in 2012 to roughly 50 now. He said bringing municipalities back into the plan and PERMA’s claim management and grants have helped stabilize costs.
"Our plan is very well funded and now is the time to look at driving our budget down," Sprague said, adding that the county can draw on reserves later in the year if needed to offset costs. Committee members praised training and municipal participation. The Administration Committee voted to adopt the 2027 workers’ compensation budget and the table of apportionment (motions carried 5-0); resolutions will be prepared.
Sprague also noted expansion of coverage discussions, including cancer‑benefit considerations for additional department members, and said he may return to committee with proposals to expand coverage scope and funding.
