Library officials defend services as council approves $1.2M request

Library board chair Sandra Mack and Director Heather Rainier presented the library's FY26-27 operating budget request and an update on renovation work after flood damage. Mack said "the majority of the funds for the renovation did come from the insurance, as well as our trust funds and fundraising such as our TD Bank affinity program," and added that only minimal tax dollars were used for carpet and maintenance lines.
Councilors pressed on payroll and the consequences of a third default budget; the library said it had already reduced part-time hours this year to meet default constraints and is tracking utility usage after LED upgrades. The council approved the $1,201,633 library budget by roll call after discussing service impacts for seniors, children and community programming and the trade-offs of further cuts.
