Residents urge denial of Monarch Data Center, present petition with more than 2,000 signatures

During the July 14 public hearing dozens of residents and tribal members urged the Planning Commission to deny or table the Monarch Data Center application, citing water consumption, potential contamination, noise, traffic and inadequate environmental review.
Several speakers asked for a moratorium on data centers until countywide rules are in place. Katlynn Calhoun told commissioners a petition signed by over 2,000 residents requests denial and calls for environmental studies to be completed before approvals. Other commenters—Justina Yellowhair, Rhonda Moore, Dora Nash, Meredyth Keast and others—raised health, noise and pollution concerns and said the project would change the valley’s future.
Speakers also criticized outreach and transparency, saying some landowners learned of plans only after agreements had been made. Multiple commenters urged formal tribal consultation before the project proceeds. No formal mitigation or study commitments were presented during public comment; speakers asked the Planning Commission to withhold a favorable recommendation until those analyses are available.
