Board backs Jim and Peggy Thompson Living Trust conservation easement for 1,300-acre ranch

Lucinda Morris and other Montana Land Reliance staff presented a proposed conservation easement for the Jim and Peggy Thompson Living Trust, a roughly 1,300-acre ranch on the east side of Canyon Ferry. Morris said the easement will keep the property intact for agriculture, allow the Thompsons to reserve two residential building envelopes and exclude the ranch headquarters from the encumbrance.
Board members asked about structural remains and gravel pits; Morris said the collapsed barn is documented for baseline purposes and that the headquarters parcel and gravel pit were intentionally cut out of the easement. A motion to support the Thompson Living Trust easement was made, seconded and passed by voice vote. MLR representatives said they are working with NRCS (ALE program) as a funding partner for this project.
