Environmental group urges PSC to finalize Northwestern Energy rate case after lengthy delay

Anne Hedges of the Montana Environmental Information Center told the commission the Northwestern Energy general rate case filed in July 2024 has exceeded the PSC’s statutory review window and should be finalized. Hedges said the PSC has a nine‑month review target but the matter has extended to roughly 25 months, with motions for reconsideration filed Jan. 15, 2026.
“Our concern is that the rate case began over two years ago and should be the PSC’s highest priority for making a decision,” Hedges said during public comment. She asked the commission to finalize decisions on motions for reconsideration so both the utility and the public have a clear resolution. Staff did not take immediate action during public comment, but commissioners acknowledged the docket and the competing workload of other high‑priority matters on the calendar.
Hedges’s comment was entered during the public‑comment portion of the Aug. 11 meeting; the commission did not vote on the Northwestern case at this session.
