LiveWell Kingston members said the commission’s recommendation for a 'children's outdoor bill of rights' has been picked up by the common council and scheduled for the government/public safety committee meeting on May 27 at 6:30 p.m.
"It'll probably be a memorializing resolution," Emily Flynn, director of health and wellness for the City of Kingston, told commissioners, explaining that such a resolution would function mainly as a statement of city values rather than create immediate obligations or funding. She read bulleted language that emphasized children's access to parks, schoolyards and natural play spaces.
Commissioners said the language may help advocates press for future funding and programming, but emphasized it was not itself an appropriation. Emily noted advocates could use the resolution to request that the city allocate resources in future budget cycles if the council endorses the values statement.
The commission plans to join presenters at the council committee meeting on May 27 to explain the policy and answer questions.
