Oak Bluffs committee advances short‑term rental bylaw, targets December town meeting

The Oak Bluffs Short‑Term Rental Ad Hoc Committee reviewed draft language for a proposed short‑term rental bylaw on Aug. 3, 2026, and agreed to pursue it as a zoning bylaw with an accompanying administrative bylaw for registration, inspections and enforcement.

Chris Chambers presented definitions, legal use provisions and compliance language intended for voter consideration; the draft limits short‑term rentals to stays of "30 days or less," and legal counsel advised the committee that treating it as a zoning bylaw is likely appropriate. Committee members asked for a concise executive summary to accompany the article for voters.

The group set a schedule for review: the updated land‑use zoning bylaw will be presented to the Planning Board by Aug. 20, 2026, and the committee plans to seek Select Board review with an aim to place the measure on the December Special Town Meeting. The administrative bylaw governing registration and enforcement is expected to be ready for Select Board review by the end of August.

The committee will continue page‑by‑page review of the draft at its next meeting on Aug. 10 at 4:30 p.m., when members will also review a draft registration form prepared by staff. No formal vote on the bylaw text was taken on Aug. 3.
