Chris (the presenter) told the board the district’s weighted average came in at $3.77 — “about 38¢ below the federal requirement,” — and that ongoing wage and freight cost increases make gradual, predictable raises preferable to sudden larger jumps. Board members emphasized avoiding a single-year price shock for families while also closing a recurring operating gap.
Trustees discussed mitigation options including donations routed through the education foundation, direct certification for students on HUSKY/state assistance, and use of non‑lapsing funds to smooth increases. A board member noted recent one‑time facilities work and operating pressures that have reduced the COVID-era surplus. One trustee cited the cost of a recent grease‑trap replacement at the high school as an example of an unplanned expense.
The Chair moved the motion to approve the 25¢ increase and it passed by voice vote. Trustees said staff will report back in the fall on participation and the program’s fiscal position so the board can reassess if needed.
